Comments:

It’s been six years since the release of my previous CD ‘Obsession’.  Although, it hasn’t taken me six years to come up with my new CD ‘Infinitum’, when I add up actual time in working on the composition part of the CD (time out from my day job), it’s hardly more than 6-12 months but spread out to six years.

And a lot of that 6-12 months was adding some wonderful sessioning from musical friends (above) and editing and refining in between ‘inspirations’.

Prominently featured on the album is Adam Martinic (guitar double-bass, electric bass, vocals), without whom this album would have slid down a few rungs in musicianship and quality.  It’s great having a real professional in the family and a special son.

Also featured on the album are a number of friends of mine who have contributed guitar (the excellent Robert James, brother of the superlative Graeme on drums, trumpet (Don Shields, man with a horn) and even Theremin (Robert Forbes, a.k.a. ‘The Professor’).

On the topic of the Theremin, after one sweltering summer afternoon’s recording session with Robert on the Theremin with no air conditioning and the black from the headphones coming off on our heads from the sweat and heat, the track turned out so apt, I thought it fitting to dub the track ‘The Professor’.  That also doubled as an apology for putting Rob through that.

The CD is packed with as many styles as I can fit into 78 minutes including ‘a capella’ boys choir, classical-style overture, progressive/rock, jazz, avant-garde, experimental, vocal pop, trance, rave to name a few and amazingly, it seems to have held together as a unified work, at least based on some of the feedback from some fellow musicians (including Adam: he’s always pretty straight-up, no soft-pedal for family).

The shortest track on the CD is a birthday offering for my good friend Anna Park which premiered at her birthday party partly performed by the youngest of the Martinic musical line, the 10 year old Rory James Martinic on trumpet.  It was later re-recorded with Don Shields taking over the part with gusto.

The plan is to put the CD and music on band camp for distribution (including a HD version) and possibly Spotify later.  The latter has my previous work ‘Obsession (2014)’ on it already.

The final outer cover design was by the very capable artist based in Beijing (Zhen Yan Zhou) who did the previous CD.  The inner art was a painting done by a multi-talented colleague of mine (Sharlene Rainford), who has her own unique very appealing style and kindly allowed me the use of it.

If you’re interested in a stylistic and production breakdown of the work, my web site will be updated in the next few weeks with detailed notes and links to band camp, etc.

Comments:

After over a year of recording, the 'Obsession' album was released at the Prior Education Centre Bondi Junction 20th September 2014. The purpose and theme of this album was to explore challenging harmonies/dissonances and pursue development in directions different from work done in the past while still remaining camped in the 'Progressive' world.

I would like to thank the session musicians Graeme James from Tramtracks (drums), Adam Martinic on bass and Paul Martinic assisting on a second drum kit. Also great thanks to the artist, Mr Zhen Yan Zhou for the use of his wonderful painting 'Disassembled' for the album artwork.

The release night was also an under-the-hood look at the digital masters and construction of a couple of tracks, showing off the instruments used and production software and a performance of part of the CD. As a release night special, the official CD is packaged with a bonus companion DVD video disc in 48kHz/24-bit 5.1 channel sound (hand made and delivered by mail after the night) and a bonus copy of the previous CD 'Sunflower' thrown in. A special thanks to Mr Rob Prior for his generous use of his premises
